Heat and Nets talking trade???

According to the Miami Herald, the Heat, who prefer to make a trade for a backup pointguard, have spoken to the New Jersey Nets for one of their backups, both ex Heaters:  Keyon Dooling or Rafer Alston.

Both are free agents after this season , and it is unclear what New Jersey would want.  They, like the Heat, are playing the 2010 caproom game, so it is unlikely they would want to add someone with a contract longer than this season.

Dooling makes a little more than $3.5 million and Rafer makes 5.25 million.

Unless the Heat throw in some draft picks (which wouldn’t be smart), I don’t see any potential fit for a trade.  The Heat would want to throw in a forward, like James Jones or Dorell Wright, but the Nets have albatross contracts at the  forward spots like Bobby Simmons ($11 million!), Trenton Hassel (4.35 million!) , Yi Jianlian, Jarvis Hayes.

To entice you about Dooling, here he is with a sick dunk over Mike Beasley (sigh.)

  1. Your right about the Nets/Heat not being the ideal trade partners. Both teams want the same thing, so whats the point of a trade? My only guess would be something along these lines.

    DWright,Quinn,Diawara for Dooling/Hayes.

But NJ would only due this to cut payroll. Something I’m not sure they are looking to do.

  2. I think they’re looking to cut payroll, I think they have a very low season ticket renewal (I think Sports Guy singled them out as a team in trouble financially). Heat really doesn’t need Jarvis with DQ, JJ, and Q here… I don’t see it, except the fact KD or Rafer would be disgruntled in NJ, one of them isn’t getting PT with Devin Harris as the PG. My money is Rafer, who has been a headcase in the past, causing a stink if he’s on the bench, which he may be since Keyon at least is a defensive role player.

  3. Wouldnt Haslem be the ideal candidate as trade bait? If Beasley time in rehab was already planned then what better way to open up time for him at PF while getting back a quality player at pg

  4. James, they can’t trade Haslem for a pointguard, because without him Beasley is the only true power forward on the roster. I think Haslem’s expiring deal could better be used for a midseason trade for one of the 2010 targets, if that team wants to unload salary. For instance, using Haslem in a deal for Amare or Boozer (if we’re keeping Beasley, then I’m not inclined for Boozer, but Amare could play center in the east).
